DEVELOPMENT JANUARY THROUGH JUNE 2009

Together:
We Are Creating the Christine Center

We know what sharing of abundance looks like because you have generously shared your treasure, so we could complete Phase One and Phase Two of our Capital Campaign. Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude!
We began Phase Three on July 12 when the bulldozers came in to install the pipes for geothermal heating. Today we look out of the window and see the cement footings of the Chapel Wing. And we know the possibility that exists (with your help) for its completion. The Board of Directors gave approval for the general contractor to build only what we have the finances for. We currently have $250,000 and need $300,000 more to finish the project. This will complete our plans to expand the facilities of the Christine Center so we can better serve you.
We have experienced your generosity and invite you to continue to help manifest what we know is possible, even in these difficult times — the new wing for a Chapel, library, meeting rooms and offices — Phase Three of the Capital Campaign. If you would like to make a financial contribution, you can use PayPal on our website or send a check by mail.

This summer we ate mushrooms from our woods and discovered that a Blanding’s turtle had joined the snapper and smaller red ones here. We haven’t made turtle soup yet, but we are living more off the land thanks to Kevin McGraw who arrived to share his knowledge of plants and animals.
Thanks, Kevin!

At the beginning of summer I sat with a group of remarkable women in La Crosse, WI. They were, you might have guessed, my family as well, the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration. The five-day assembly was an opportunity to know each other more deeply in the process of setting our sites on the future. With the tradition of perpetual adoration as our heritage, the outcome might have been expected. Over the years we have articulated and commissioned ourselves to works of mercy, justice and care of the earth. But now foremost in our hearts was a deeper, underlying passion that sprang forward and demanded to be spoken aloud. Words frame the desire, though limp, inadequately expressing the commitment we are reaching to embrace more publicly: inner transformation, authentic relationships, spiritual awakening.
These qualities are radically in sync with the Christine Center’s mission! We say yes! and find encouragement in our sisters to take the next steps of going forward, deepening the work, expanding our potential and embracing the vision of spiritual deepening and global transformation. We invite you to reflect on your own call and response to transformation, relationships and awakening.
The words of Scripture come to mind: I come that you may have life and have it more abundantly. Abundant life is a given. I guess we just have to reach for it, long for it, and seek it every day. The Christine Center supports that search if it does nothing else.
The summer passed joyously as many of you came to stay awhile. The gardens expanded and flourished. The Life Source Center was christened “Siloe” (sil’-o-way) and everyone cheered for its beauty and practicality. Trails around the lower pond were greatly improved and the Earth Spirit Garden is under reconstruction.
Most importantly we broke ground for the new wing on July 12. It was a long anticipated groundbreaking day. We count on you to stand by us and help in any way you can to bring this CENTERPIECE of our capital campaign to completion.
The Center welcomes you to take a pause in your busy life. This newsletter describes some of the upcoming events for your consideration.
Blessings always,
Cecilia Corcoran, FSPA

Dear Friends and Strangers,

MANY OF YOU HAVE ASKED HOW YOU CAN HELP:

Brick by Brick, Dollar by Dollar
Commemorative bricks will be prominently installed along the new addition. Your name, your company or the name of a loved one — will be a lasting recognition of your commitment to all spiritual seekers.
See our website for detailed information or call for the Commemorative Brick Order Form. Bricks go for $100 (4”x8”), $250 (8”x8”) and $500 (12”x12”).
Auction
Before the end of the year, the Capital Campaign committee will sponsor an auction to raise an additional $25,000 for the building of the Chapel Wing — with the new library and meeting rooms — so critical to our ability to meet the needs of our guests. Suggested items include: artwork, jewelry, gift baskets, weekend-getaway packages, housewares, gardening items, sporting tickets or equipment, etc. Consider donating anything appropriate with a $100 or more value. Items may be added to the donation to make one terrific package. Your donation will be graciously displayed and acknowledged.

Breaking NEWS:
A Circle of Leadership
for the Center

As we go to press we are pleased to announce that plans
have finalized to bring Gabriele Uhlein and Marge Zulaski into the Leadership Team.
With the expansion of the Center underway, it is important to create a Core Leadership
Team to sustain the mission and guide it into the future. For that reason we welcome the
addition of two capable leaders onto the Core Team for the Christine Center.
Ss. Marge Zulaski and Gabriele Uhlein are anticipating their move to the Christine
Center in the spring of 2010.Having recently completed eight years of leadership in
their Wheaton Franciscan community, their sabbatical discernment prompted each of
them to choose being a part of the Christine Center.. Marge, a Jungian analyst,
consultant and spiritual director, values the way in which the Christine Center offers a
place of “stillness” to reconnect with nature and to come home to soul. Sr.
Gabriele, a Franciscan theologian, retreat director and artist, the Christine Center is a
return to her early spiritual roots. She was one of the many that frequently came to
help S. Virginia Mary Barta in the early days of the center, and now looks forward to a
renewed and ecologically aware life-style with S. Marge. Gabriele has been on the Board
of the Center since 2006 and has worked closely with the Christine Center’s signature
program: Spiritual Deepening for Global Transformation.

“Rejoice with us as we welcome Marge and Gabriele!

Gabriele Uhlein, OSF has been a member of the Christine Center Board since 2006.

The Center staff offers a big thanks to Cathy Teoste who has shared her many talents with us: from cooking fabulous soups to creating quality graphic design pieces, to her warm and loving presence.
To all of our wonderful volunteers, our heartfelt appreciation!

“We want to live a spirit-led call to being part of a core circle that provides a sanctuary for soul in tune with nature and honoring of Earth. The Christine Center provides such an opportunity. We imagine ourselves participating in its prayer and retreat rhythms and contributing our creative energies to its unfolding future.”

Turn, Turn, Turn: Women Who Change
Nov 13-15, 2009

Facilitator: Midge Miles
Turn, Turn, Turn is a unique retreat experience for women designed around archetypal themes of change and transformation revealed in three sacred stories from myth, folk and fairy tale. Midge’s dramatic storytelling performances are the loom on which the threads of gentle input, discussion, reflection and ritual weave a golden tapestry of women’s magnificent journeys of change. Each of the retreat’s stories provides new images and metaphors for exploring the themes of: Surrendering received stories and beliefs about ourselves that are no longer true, crossing over uncharted waters, leaving “abodes” that have become too small for us, affirming the bond between aging and generativity, and celebrating women’s eternal cycles of change — Child, Maiden, Mother and Crone.
Tuition: $150, plus meals and lodging
Midge Miles’ lifelong passion has been working to help women find and cherish their authentic sacred stories. She has published articles, audio and video programs on women’s spirituality and story, and presented retreats across the U.S. and southern Ontario.

Inner Peace with Yoga
FEATURING YOGA NIDRA MEDITATION — Nov 13-15, 2009

Facilitator: Roberta Hodges
Yoga Nidra is the most powerful relaxation technique known.
Yoga Nidra means yogic sleep, conscious deep sleep. As simple as guided relaxation, it takes one into the deepest possible relaxation of the body and the most profound stillness of mind. This transformingly deep, blissful state of consciousness is not only the perfect condition for physical and emotional healing, but also brings one to the door of Samadhi, the deep state of meditation.
The workshop will include gentle yoga, traditional hatha yoga, pranayama, chakra balancing, periods of silence, kirtan, and full, natural breathing practice. A more complete description can be found at www.christinecenter.org.
Tuition: $150
Roberta Hodges has been studying, practicing and teaching yoga in the Himalayan tradition for over 20 years, including Raja Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and more recently Tantra Yoga. She travels to India regularly for study, practice and inspiration. She also is a practicing massage therapist and energy worker.

Swadhyaya II: A Yoga Retreat on the Study of the Yogic Scriptures — Nov 20-22, 2009

Facilitator: Jenifer Ebel
The yogic scriptures give us everything we need for inspiration in our practice. They bring a breath of wisdom from the sages of old with concise directions for breath, posture, and lifestyle, and for integrating it all into the life you have.
In this program, the postures, breath work, and meditations will be woven together with nuggets of wisdom and grace from some of the greatest spiritual teachers of all time. We will draw from such classic texts as the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. A study of the yogic scriptures is one of the preliminary steps to yoga and forms part of the foundation for a practice that will stand the test of time.
Tuition: $200 plus meals and lodging
Please note: This is not an entry level class. Some yoga knowledge and experience is assumed. You don’t have to attend Swadhyaya I to take this retreat.
Jenifer has basic and advanced teacher certifications at Kripalu, and additional teacher training in Anusara and Iyengar Yoga. She is a member of Kripalu Yoga Teachers Association, Yoga Alliance (500ERYT), and International Association of Yoga Therapists.

Mindfulness Meditation and Yoga Retreat
Feb 19-21, 2010

Facilitators: Susan Mickel and Sue Twiggs
This weekend will offer instruction in two traditions: yoga postures and mindfulness meditation. The Buddhist mindfulness tradition originally assumed an awareness of yoga, but for centuries they have been practiced largely separately. This retreat takes the perspective that the two practices can complement each other. The retreat will be silent, alternating periods of yoga, sitting meditation and walking meditation. There will be leadership at all of the sessions and instruction at most of them, with opportunities to ask questions, group discussion, and talks integrating the two practices with day-to-day life. No prior knowledge of either tradition is necessary to attend. There will be sadhana for experienced yoga practitioners as well as introductory yoga for those new to the practice.
Both teachers are accepting no fixed honorarium for the retreat. There will be an opportunity to make a voluntary donation to the teachers at the end of the retreat.
Susan Mickel is a trained Christian spiritual director, a meditation teacher with Resources for Ecumenical Spirituality, and a behavioral neurologist. Her undergraduate major was in comparative religions. Sue Twiggs is a yoga practitioner and a 200-hour certified Kripalu Yoga teacher. She returns yearly to Kripalu for advanced training in pranayama and asana. Her background includes a career as a psychotherapist and conflict resolution consultant.

The Living Waters

(article about Christine Center summer retreat for 6/27/09 “Community Life” -- Marshfield)

The Living Waters

By Kris Rued-Clark

Symbolism runs deep at the Christine Center. The 14 guest hermitages carry names such as Earth, Sun, and Freedom. The recently completed Siloe (pronounced sil’-o-way) is named after the pond in Jerusalem where Jesus healed a man who had been blind since birth. Many people on a spiritual journey feel as if their eyes have been opened for the first time in their lives. Located across the road from the Center’s well, Siloe contains the laundry and guest showers, in addition to two meeting rooms.
Founded in 1980, the Christine Center is a unique sanctuary for spiritual deepening, leading to individual and global transformation. With respect for all faith traditions, the Center bears the Franciscan hallmarks of simplicity, welcoming hospitality, and love for nature.
Cecelia Corcoran, or Cecy as she prefers to be called, shows guests around the Christine Center. She strides vigorously as if there are not enough hours in the day. A Franciscan nun, Cecy now lives in “Peace” at the Christine Center. She directs the day-to-day operations and also leads tours that have taken her from South America to Eastern Europe.
Describing the 1st Annual Interfaith Summer Retreat, July 10th through the 12th, Cecy says, “Various faith traditions are coming together for a weekend of very deep sharing, learning, and meditating together.” Jean Feraca, author and 25-year veteran of public talk radio, will facilitate dialogue between the participants and the three featured presenters: Venerable Thubten Chodron, a Buddhist nun; Joseph Kilikevice, O.P., Founder and Director of Shem Center for Interfaith Spirituality in Chicago; and Physicist Chuck Pfeifer.
Cecy explains, “On Friday night they will lay out for retreatants their own stories, telling where they encountered healing through spiritual deepening and why this important work affects global transformation.” She explains that as we find inner peace, we can have a significant impact on the world in which we live. “The barriers and walls that surround us cause personal suffering and illness and maladies that beset our time. With inner peace, we can release the energy for others to be healed. We can be a reconciling presence in the world.”
Because the Interfaith Retreat is a fund-raiser for the Christine Center, it is more expensive than many of the weekend retreats. “To afford this quality of group, we have to charge more, but we don’t want to leave people out. We now have three large hermitages for shared space. We welcome people to explore sharing a larger cabin with groups of friends, or if they are open to share with others.” Another option is to bring a tent. “We have plenty of room for tenting, and that really reduces the prices,” adds Cecy. Three of the hermitages have kitchenettes. Bringing some of your own meals can also help with costs.
Visitors to the Christine Center will find many improvements this summer. The addition of Siloe has created more space for bathing for campers and for those in the rustic hermitages. Cecy: “It’s so much nicer! People are delighted since we opened Siloe in early April. It’s been used a lot.” The two rooms give additional meeting space for small groups. “Siloe is in a secluded area, a very quiet and beautifully wooded area of the grounds.”
Much other work has also been completed. “We rehabbed the hermitages and added an additional log cabin, Guadalupe.” Gardens have been expanded significantly. Cecy: “We have a work study person who has been in the garden business for 13 years. He is gardening this summer, and other volunteers work with him. He has really taken hold of the gardens in a remarkable way. He’s been a real help. We’ve tripled our vegetable garden. We also have plans for long-range production to raise more of our food.”
Cecy adds that volunteers are welcome all summer to help with gardening and assist in improving the trails. “We do have openings July 10th through the 12th for volunteers. The first priority is food preparation. If they could come Friday evening they could possibly attend the first session and may be able to take in some sessions on Saturday.”
Summing up the 1st Annual Interfaith Summer Retreat, July 10th through the 12th, Cecy adds, “It is such an incredible offering, to have this inspiring panel right here in central Wisconsin. They have really lived the life and seen the incredible power you can access when you are open to contact with the Divine through prayer and meditation.”
The Christine Center is also beginning a second three-year certificate program, “Spiritual Deepening for Global Transformation.” This intensive program meets four times per year and provides participants with a unique opportunity to cultivate a deep inner life. “This is for people who are at that point in their life when they are beginning to get in touch with a spiritual hunger. Maybe they’ve been here for other programs and they’ve seen the dynamic community here and been nourished by what we have.”
Emphasizing that the three-year program is a commitment, Cecy adds, “It requires an application and recommendations – one can’t take it lightly.” She explains that many people make a commitment to meditation, to healthy living, to being more compassionate in their responses to other people. “We all make New Year’s resolutions, and most of them last about six weeks. With this program, people journey together and discover the power in doing the work as a group, sharing each other’s support.”
Located just south of Willard, the Christine Center brings together spiritual seekers from all faiths to quench their thirst, to drink deeply from the living well of prayer and meditation. For more information, go to www.christinecenter.org, or call 715-267-7507 or toll-free, 866-333-7507.

Greening the Soul

"The soul is a breath of living spirit that
with excellent sensitivity
permeates the entire body to give it life.
Just so,
The breath of the air makes the earth fruitful.
Thus the air is the soul of the earth,
Moistening it; greening it."

--Hildegard von Bingen

We are in our greening time here at the Christine Center. Spring is lush, verdant, alive, soothing and inspiring. New turtles have arrived and are mixing with their older family in the pond, along with pollywogs, frogs and ducks. The Oriolles and Red-winged blackbirds are singing the morning into the sweet song of day. The deer are nibbling at all things green! The rabbits are hopping about. The owls at night fill the air with the echoes of thought, unspoken during day. Oh, and don't forget the ticks! We've got plenty of those! Nonetheless, we are blessed this time of year, to be filled with the soul of the earth, to be ensconced in a green canopy of delicate, strong, beautiful green life. Oak, Willow, Birch and Pine, iris, lily of the valley, cattail and wild ramps, these and many other greening things grace the Christine Center with their abundance. The soul is greening too, and how! Morning and afternoon and evening walks beneath and within the green does a strange a wonderful thing!
